  • SELF-PROMOTION This promotional folded poster was designed to introduce myself to you.

By the front of the poster, I used a really simple phrase to present myself, “I’m a graphic designer”. At the same time, I tried to use different forms and visual languages to visualize the phrase. By the back of the poster is the color spectrum of my college life in graphic design!

  • NEW MUSEUM (STUENT BRANDING PROJECT) This comprehensive identity for the NEW MUSEUM which is located in downtown Manhattan, the only museum in New York City that exclusively devoted to presenting contemporary art from all around the world. The NEW MUSEUM is dedicated to contemporary art, and places a unique emphasis on the use of contemporary creativity, materials, techniques and artist’s creative process from the art craft, on canvas, paper and film and so much more.

Their original identity system was a typographic solution. The designer used “New +? + Museum”. I found it to be generic, and lacking the essence of this special museum. After extensive research, I found that among the tourists and local viewers, 95% have no visual lasting impression for the museum’s identity, or it’s uniqueness. That became my topic=challenge: Creating a new exciting and memorable identity for the NEW MUSEUM, that communicates its uniqueness.

My initial desire to design an identity without featuring the building was bland and did not bring out the museum’s attributes. I determined that the building itself is the most memorable iconic feature of the museum. Different from MOMA or Metropolitan Museum. The NEW MUSEUM is well known for its building. 80% viewers recognize and identify the museum because of the shape of it’s building and the experimental body of work which is presented within its walls. So the unique shape of the building became the constant for my identity system for the museum.

At the same time, I did try to make the whole identity system transforms itself like a chameleon from application to application, changes from media to media and keep changing depends on the different exhibitions presented in the museum. The museum itself is diverse, innovating, sustainable, and welcomes the “ever changing”.My analogy was – a unique container, which is keeps absorbing different kinds of ideas, arts, designs and continuously generates new content. The new design solution is, the building’s shape and the name “New Museum” which are constant in the identity system. The blank inner space of the building’s shape keeps changing depending on different exhibitions, which make the whole identity system unique, memorable, flexible, creative and sustainable.

  • "U" AND "I" The book, “U” and “I”, introduces the life of my classmate Rhett and me from born to now. Rhett is a New Jersey boy and I come from China. We were born in totally different countries and grown up in different cultures and education. In the past 25 years we didn’t know each other, because our countries have a distance of 20000 km, which is almost half of the circumference of the earth. However, we met together and became classmate in Pratt Institute. It’s a miracle!

The whole book compares our answers to same questions. Through these same or totally different answers, readers can get to know the culture and new generation’s values of life between the two countries, China and America.

There is no graphic or pictures in the book. I use onlytypeface, Univers, to show different information between the two books.

  • What should I do? By now everyone has seen the Nike commercial where LeBron asks what he should have done. You've probably also seen the response video by Cleveland filmmaker Dan Wintz. Did you have that moment that questioned yourself what should I do?
This project was inspired by this famous Nike ad. I was trying to ask myself what should I do in the school’s final exam.

  • TAIHU STONE The Taihu stone, also named porous stone, is a kind of limestone. They are produced along the Taihu Lake at the foot of Dongting Mountain of Suzhou. For the long-time surging of the waves, the stones are featuring numerous pores and holes. Peculiar and precipitous in appearance, they are of high ornamental value and have been much favored by garden designers since the ancient.

I'M trying to form a taihu stone with life elements. I use stools, cloth, and iron wires construct taihu stones with the relationship among point, line and panel in mind. It is my understanding of the characteristics of the traditional taihu stone.

  • 24 Hours Visualizing Global Marathon Previously underdeveloped countries in the Americas and Africa have begun to prosper. As their GDPs rise, the degree of malnutrition is simultaneously decreasing. Although deforestation is aiding growth and increasing quality of life in these countries, the rate at which it is occurring jeopardizes their economic, environmental and social sustainability. If simultaneous replanting of vegetation is not part of the trajectory, these countries will not see a sustainable future.     2013 Art Direction, Graphic Design, Illustration
